Passionate about travel, it was probably a must to land in a school program about tourism. On that special day, there would be a conference to inform us about the famous gap years through our dear planet.
Obviously, Australia popped out through the conference.
“This is the main destination where travellers contact us to cancel / postpone their return flight. Most people do not want to return home because they found love and/or had a big crush on the country. “
Australia… Will I really have enough money to get there? My fantasies were quickly evaporated and I preferred to let myself be tempted by a more realistic goal; Western Canada for a little two months. More realistic, less expensive (being Canadian) and perfect to improve my English.
When the plan meets the new one:
After a few weeks, while I vainly tried to plan my return to real life, all my plans were collapsing one by one. So I decided to extend my stay in Western Canada.
One of my good friends was in Australia and I remember having long conversations via Skype about her adventures. Being a travel freak, my main hobby is to watch the flights tickets just in case I would see the deal of the century … That day, I was pleasantly surprised to find that flights to Australia from Calgary are much cheaper than from Montreal. Wedged between the debts, dreams and excitement, I started to make research about the Working Holiday Visas. The idea was simple; if I do not have the budget to afford a vacation to Australia, why not go on a work and travel trip. This is the perfect compromise for the broke traveller like me.
When the plan meets the reality:
And then, I had to tell my parents … who have accepted my decision through their doubts and the fact they missed me.
I also had to tell my boss and friends … After already five months away from my life in Quebec, it was hard (and exciting at the meantime) to announce that, this time, I would not come back.
I was admired, I was told that I was lucky, that I was inspiring… and probably a bit crazy!
So I left the winter and the -35 degrees to land to Australia…
When the plan meets the expectations:
I was not sure what to expect when arriving in Australia, but certainly I didn`t expect this. My plans with my friends were not really like I had imagined. So, I left them behind to start pursuing my own dreams and not theirs. My trip, my way…
If I expected a higher cost of living, I had no idea how it was true. To work and travel was, is and will be the best solution in my situation. If I am still trapped with my debts, my stay in Australia is fulfilled with vacation and work here and there.
During my first month, I remember that I could not see myself applying for a second-year visa, or at least not for now. I also thought that a year might be too long.
When the plan meets Australia:
After I dropped my first impressions, I was more than able to appreciate Australia, road trips, beaches and Australian lifestyle. I also let myself be charmed by the salary. Work and travel allows me to save lots (while paying my debts) for my next adventures.
Let me say that after nine months, I was more than happy to get the second year visa and I am terribly excited to see what Australia hold for me for this next year. Needless to say I am one of those persons mentioned at the beginning…
… I have a crush on Australia and on another traveller.
