Getting the job is exciting. Take a moment to get the basics clear before your first shift, while the conversation is still about expectations.
Confirm the arrangement
Ask who employs you, what the job involves and whether the role is casual, part-time or full-time. Get the pay arrangement, roster process and start details in writing where possible. Ask who to contact if a shift changes.
Check pay with the right source
An advertised hourly number is only a starting point. Your applicable award or agreement, classification and circumstances can affect entitlements. Use Fair Work’s pay calculator (opens in a new tab) rather than a rate passed around in a group chat.
Ask about any trial
A limited, supervised demonstration of relevant skills can sometimes be unpaid. A business calling a shift a trial does not settle whether it should be paid. Check Fair Work’s unpaid trials guidance (opens in a new tab) before agreeing to an unclear arrangement.
Keep your own records
Record actual start and finish times, breaks and roster changes. Save payslips and messages. If something looks wrong, ask for an explanation and use Fair Work’s help channels when needed.
