Explore your neighbourhood before you book a big trip: a simple plan for getting your bearings.

You do not need a packed sightseeing schedule to enjoy your first weekend. A familiar route and a couple of places you like can make a new city feel much smaller.
Choose one neighbourhood
Start near home or campus. Find a grocery shop, a library or a park, then stop somewhere you can sit without rushing. Make a note of the places you would come back to on a normal weekday.
Try the journey before you need it
Practise the trip to campus or work during daylight. Check the local transport operator’s current ticket, payment and service information, including the return journey. Concessions depend on local eligibility; do not assume your student ID is enough. Find the right operator in our transport resources.
Make space for company
Invite a classmate for a walk or check your student association’s event calendar. A simple plan is easier to say yes to than an expensive full-day trip.
Save the bigger booking for later
When comparing a paid activity, check transport, weather, cancellation terms and everything the price includes. Set a spending limit before browsing so a promotion does not choose the day for you.
